Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)
Otoplasty (Ear Pinning)- Ear Correction Surgery
Commonly known as “ear pinning”, otoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure used to correct prominent or protruding ears. This operation can also be used to help reshape the ears or decrease any asymmetry between the two sides. While many of these operations are performed in the paediatric population, a large percentage of otoplasty patients are adults.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an otoplasty?
An otoplasty is a surgical procedure that alters the shape of the ears to decrease prominence and help decrease asymmetry. The operation is done under either local or general anaesthesia at the patient’s preference and lasts 1-2 hours. The surgical incision is located on the back of the ear so it remains hidden from site, and the underlying cartilage is then sculpted to the desired form. This is usually done by holding the cartilage in shape with sutures, although in some cases a small amount of cartilage needs to be removed. The surgical incision is then closed with dissolving sutures and a head dressing is applied that stays in place for 5-7 days.
