What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a suction technique to remove excess fat from various parts of the body. It is one of the most popular and effective surgeries available, and it can help improve the shape and proportion of your body. Liposuction can be used to target excess fat in areas such as the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, arms, and chin. The procedure is relatively quick, and patients can usually expect to see results in a matter of days.

One of the most common concerns we hear from patients visiting our Ottawa Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery is that despite their best attempts at diet and exercise, there are still areas of body fat that seem to be impossible to lose. These frustrating areas may simply be due to genetics and have nothing to do with overall fitness. Fortunately, modern Ottawa liposuction techniques are safe and highly effective at removing unwanted fat to provide a dramatically improved appearance.

What Are the Benefits of Liposuction?

One benefit of liposuction is improved body shape. This procedure reduces the amount of fat from specific areas of the body, allowing for a more slender and toned appearance. Because of the precise nature of liposuction, areas of the body that cannot be changed through diet and exercise can be addressed. This can improve the overall shape and contour of the body, and help to improve self–confidence in the process.

Another benefit of liposuction is improved health. The fat that is removed during the procedure contains toxins that can cause health problems if left in the body. By removing this fat, the risk of health problems such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes is reduced. Additionally, liposuction can help to improve circulation, which can further reduce the risk of health problems.

Finally, liposuction can improve physical comfort. Fat deposits can cause pain and discomfort, especially in areas such as the hips and thighs. By removing this fat, the discomfort can be reduced, allowing for improved physical activity and greater overall comfort. Additionally, liposuction can also help to reduce the appearance of cellulite, a common problem that can cause discomfort.

Overall, liposuction is an effective way to improve the shape and contour of the body, reduce the risk of health problems, and improve physical comfort. With the help of an experienced surgeon, the procedure can be done safely and effectively, allowing for the many benefits of liposuction to be enjoyed.

What Liposuction Can't Do?

Liposuction is a highly effective procedure for removing localized fat deposits, but it has its limitations. Here’s what liposuction can’t do:

Treat Obesity

Liposuction is not a weight-loss solution. It only removes stubborn fat that is resistant to diet and exercise.

Tighten Loose Skin

Liposuction removes fat but does not address excess skin. If you have significant skin laxity, procedures like a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) may be necessary to remove excess skin and tighten the area.

Improve Cellulite

Liposuction is not an effective treatment for cellulite. In some cases, it can even make the appearance of cellulite worse by creating uneven contours.

Treat Stretch Marks

Liposuction does not address stretch marks. They are a result of skin stretching and tearing at a deeper level, and liposuction only removes fat.

Correct Deep Fat

Liposuction is effective for removing subcutaneous fat (the fat just under the skin) but not visceral fat (fat around the internal organs). Visceral fat is linked to more serious health issues and requires lifestyle changes for reduction.

Completely Reshape the Body

While liposuction can improve body contours, it cannot completely change your body shape.

Substitute for a Healthy Lifestyle

Liposuction can contour your body, but it’s not a substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Ensure Long-term Results Without Maintenance

The fat cells removed during liposuction are gone permanently, but new fat cells can develop if you gain weight after the procedure.

Combining Liposuction with Other Procedures

At Kanata Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, you can combine liposuction with other cosmetic surgeries to improve overall results. Common combinations include:

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Liposuction is used to remove excess fat, while a tummy tuck addresses loose skin and muscle laxity.

Breast Augmentation or Reduction

Liposuction can be used to contour the chest area during breast surgery.

Facelift

Liposuction can help refine the jawline and neck area as part of a facelift procedure.

What Are the Types of Liposuction Techniques?

Liposuction isn’t a one-size-fits-all procedure. Here at Kanata Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery in Ottawa, we offer a variety of liposuction techniques to target your specific concerns.

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent Liposuction is the most common form of liposuction that involves a special numbing solution. This involves injecting a sterile solution called tumescent fluid into the fatty area. This fluid is a mix of saline (saltwater), lidocaine (a local anesthetic similar to what dentists use to numb your mouth), and epinephrine (a medication that helps shrink blood vessels). The tumescent fluid makes the targeted area swell and firm up. This puffiness helps the doctor precisely target the fat cells when they use a suction tool to remove them.

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL)

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL) is another option that uses ultrasonic energy to remove fat. This technique uses a cannula that releases ultrasound vibrations. These vibrations liquefy (melt) the fat cells before they're suctioned out. Because the fat is more liquid, it's easier to remove, especially in areas with tougher or thicker fat tissue.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction (LAL)

Laser-Assisted Liposuction (LAL) is a different approach. It’s a minimally invasive liposuction technique that uses a thin laser fibre inserted through a small incision. This laser fires energy into the fat cells, breaking them down and making them easier to remove. LAL is great for smaller areas and can even help tighten the skin a bit by stimulating collagen production, which helps keep skin firm.

Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL)

Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL) is an advanced liposuction technique that uses a specialized, motorized cannula to quicken the fat-removal process. Unlike traditional liposuction methods that rely solely on manual force to break up and remove fat, PAL incorporates a vibrating tip that rapidly moves back and forth, making it easier to dislodge fat cells with less physical effort. This means more precise results, smoother curves, and often quicker surgery for you.

Are You a Good Liposuction Candidate?

A good candidate for liposuction at our Ottawa plastic surgery clinic is someone who is of relatively normal weight but has pockets of excess fat that have been resistant to diet and exercise. Other factors that can contribute to making an individual an ideal candidate include: adequate skin elasticity, good overall health and an area of the body that can easily be contoured with liposuction. All the ideal candidates for liposuction must have realistic expectations regarding the results that can be achieved through the procedure and have to be physically and mentally healthy.

Is Liposuction Permanent?

A common question our patients constantly ask is whether the results of liposuction are permanent. The answer is yes, liposuction can be a permanent solution for fat removal in targeted areas. That’s because adults have a fixed number of fat cells, which liposuction removes, so you’ll have less fat storage in those areas. However, even though weight gain is still possible after liposuction, the reduced number of fat cells means those areas are less likely to accumulate extra fat. Good news is losing weight after liposuction might even be easier, and you might see improved results from your healthy habits.

The Liposuction Procedure

Consultation

Starting your liposuction journey at Kanata Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery is simple. The first step is to book your consultation with Dr. James Lacey.  During your consultation, you’ll both determine if it’s the right choice for your goals and even take some photos to track your progress. He’ll provide clear pre-operative instructions, including dietary guidelines and medications to avoid. Dr. Lacey will also review your medical history and answer any questions you have about medications, supplements, or herbs you’re currently taking.

Preparation

Liposuction surgery prep starts the week before. Ensure you have any prescribed recovery medications beforehand and avoid taking over-the-counter meds without consulting Dr. Lacey first. Prepare for a thorough body cleanse by purchasing gentle soap and washing your entire body, focusing on areas like your belly button and back, for about two minutes.

Two days before surgery, carefully shave the surgical area with a clean razor and cleanse it with soap. In the lead-up to surgery, stick to a light, easy-to-digest diet and avoid heavy, greasy foods to minimize bloating and potential constipation after surgery.

Finally, the night before surgery, follow strict fasting instructions: no food or drink (including water) after midnight. If you take essential medications, confirm with Dr. Lacey if you can take them with a small sip of water in the morning. Skip chewing gum, mints, lotions, deodorants, or creams on surgery day to avoid interfering with surgical markings.

Anesthesia

To make sure you’re comfortable and relaxed during liposuction, we’ll use general anesthesia. This means you’ll be completely asleep and won’t feel a thing while the procedure happens.

Incision and Fat Removal

Once you’re under anesthesia, Dr. Lacey will make small incisions in the targeted areas.  Through these incisions, he’ll insert a cannula. This cannula helps break up the fat cells before they’re suctioned out. The duration of the liposuction procedure can vary depending on the number of areas being treated and the amount of fat being removed.

Post-Procedure

After the surgery, Dr. Lacey will close the incisions and bandage the treated areas. After which, you’ll be taken to a recovery area to rest. You might feel some soreness or swelling in the treated areas, but we’ll provide you with pain medication to manage any discomfort. You’ll likely wear a compression garment for a while after surgery to help minimize swelling and support your healing.

What Can I Expect in My Liposuction Recovery?

Recovery from liposuction typically takes a few weeks. It’s important to take it easy during this time and avoid strenuous activity. Dr. James Lacey will give you specific instructions on how to care for your incisions and gradually return to your normal routine. Most folks experience good results within a few months, as the swelling subsides and the final contours become more evident.

Remember, everyone heals at their own pace.  If you have any questions or concerns during your recovery, don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Lacey.

Will I Have Scars After Liposuction?

Liposuction uses tiny incisions to remove fat. These incisions are usually small and placed in hidden areas, so any scars that form are less noticeable. Modern techniques and good aftercare also help minimize scars. Most scars fade over time, making your new shape even better.

Potential Risks and Complications

Liposuction, like any surgery, has some risks. That’s why at Kanata Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, safety is our priority.  Our board-certified surgeon Dr. James Lacey takes the time to get to know you during your consultation. This helps him decide if liposuction is the right choice for you, or if there might be a better option to achieve your goals. However, there are still some risks associated with Liposuction which includes:

FAQs

Many areas of the body can be successfully treated with the use of liposuction. The most common areas include the abdomen, thighs, hips, flanks, chest and neck.

Depending on the area and amount of fat to be removed, this procedure can be completed under local or general anaesthetic. Tumescent fluid is first injected into the treatment area to assist in fat removal. This fluid also includes medications that both decrease blood loss and provide long-lasting pain relief following surgery. A tiny incision is then made in the skin and a vacuum instrument known as a liposuction cannula is introduced into the treatment area. The cannula is then used to uniformly remove fat and provide a smooth, natural appearance. After liposuction has been completed, the incision is sutured closed and dressings including a compressive garment are applied.

Yes! As long as patients remain at a relatively constant weight post-operatively, the results are permanent.

The best candidates for liposuction surgery have localized, difficult to lose fat deposits. Liposuction is not a weight loss surgery however, and is also not a treatment well-suited for patients who have excess skin. To find out if you would be a good candidate for liposuction surgery, please contact our clinic to schedule an appointment with Dr. Lacey.
