What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation surgery, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that enhances the size, shape, and overall appearance of a person’s breasts. This procedure involves the insertion of breast implants, typically filled with silicone or saline, to increase the fullness and projection of the breasts.

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, and is often sought by women who desire larger, perkier, or more symmetrical breasts.

During the breast augmentation surgery, the plastic surgeon makes an incision in the breast tissue or under the breast and places the implants either under or on top of the chest muscles. The size, shape, and material of the breast implants can be customized to meet the specific desires of the patient, resulting in a natural-looking and proportionate appearance.

Breast augmentation can also address issues such as drooping or sagging breasts, and can improve the overall balance and harmony of a person’s figure. With advanced surgical techniques and high-quality implants, breast augmentation surgery can produce long-lasting and satisfying results for those seeking to enhance the appearance of their breasts.

Why do Women Choose Breast Augmentation in Ontario?

The decision to undergo breast augmentation varies from person to person. One of the most obvious reasons for breast augmentation is an immediate increase in the size and fullness of the breasts. Another reason is related to health benefits. For example, the procedure can massively improve posture and reduce neck and back pain. However, women of all ages go for breast enhancements for several different reasons too. These include:

1-Correcting Asymmetry

Some women have naturally asymmetrical breasts. If this is something that bothers you, breast augmentation can help create a more balanced and symmetrical look for you, allowing you to feel comfortable in your own skin.

2-Restoring Volume After Pregnancy Or Weight Loss

After pregnancy, breastfeeding, or losing a lot of weight, your breasts can change. They might end up looking deflated, flat, or saggy. Breast augmentation can help you restore that lost volume and curves, enhancing your overall look.

3-Improving Proportions

If you feel your breasts are too small for your body, a breast enlargement procedure can give you a more balanced and proportionate figure.

4-Reconstructive Purposes

Maybe you're considering breast implants because trauma or disease such as breast cancer, has impacted you. In such cases, breast augmentation can restore your femininity after mastectomy and can offer emotional benefits after a traumatic treatment process.

5-Aging

As you age, your breasts may naturally lose volume and firmness due to changes in hormone levels, skin elasticity, and other factors. Breast augmentation can help you get that volume back and make you look and feel younger.

Who Are the Ideal Candidates for Breast Augmentation?

Well, the criteria are pretty simple. If you have realistic expectations, are generally healthy, and have clear goals in mind, then this procedure is suited for you. Here’s what it usually looks like:
4 (2) min
Good Physical Health

Basically, candidates should be in good shape, health-wise. You shouldn't have any medical conditions that might make surgery riskier or impede the healing process.

Stable Weight

It's recommended that you keep your weight stable because significant fluctuations can affect the outcome of breast augmentation. So, it's a good idea to maintain your ideal weight before undergoing surgery.

Fully Developed Breasts

You should have fully developed breasts, which usually happens in your late teens or early twenties. Some teenagers might be considered for breast augmentation if they have uneven or underdeveloped breasts, but it's super important to make sure they're mature enough and mentally ready for it. It’s important that you consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. James Lacey. He’ll check if it's right for you, chat about your goals, and suggest the best way to get the results you're after.

What to Know Before Your Consultation?

For your consultation, Dr. James Lacey will dive into your medical history, examine your breasts, and walk you through implant options – whether it’s silicone or saline implants. Want to see how they’ll look? Check out our before & after photos and see the implants in clinic. Worried about safety?

Our staff will ease your concerns with a tour of our state-of-the-art facility and on-site Operating Room. Then, it’s your call on implant size, placement, and any extra tweaks you might want, like a breast lift.

How to Plan Your Breast Augmentation?

When you’re planning your breast augmentation, you’ve got choices to make – like picking the perfect size, shape, and material for your implants. It’s all about finding what fits your body and your vision best. When we’re mapping out the procedure, we focus on four key aspects to make sure everything goes just right.

1-Implant Types

When you’re thinking about breast augmentation and considering implants, you’ve got two main options: saline and silicone.

Silicone Gel Implants

Silicone implants are made entirely of silicone, with a silicone gel filling. They offer various sizes and shapes, including “gummy bear” implants, known for their firmness. While they provide a natural look and feel, there’s a higher risk of rupture.

Saline Implants

Saline implants have a silicone outer shell filled with sterile salt water after insertion, leading to smaller incisions. They’re usually cheaper than silicone. However, they might be more visible under the skin, causing rippling, and you may feel water movement. Some find them firmer than natural tissue, but they can be overfilled to prevent rippling.

Here’s a simple overview of implant types to check which option aligns best with you.

Feature Saline Breast Implants Silicone breast implants
FeelTypically firmer and less natural-feelingOften described as feeling more similar to natural breast tissue
Incision SizeGenerally requires smaller incisions for placementMay require slightly larger incisions for placement
Risk of RuptureMore prone to rippling and wrinkling, especially in thin tissuesLess prone to rippling and wrinkling
MaintenanceIf ruptured, saline is harmlessly absorbed by the bodyIf ruptured, silicone may stay within the implant capsule
LongevityMay have a shorter lifespan compared to silicone implantsGenerally have a longer lifespan
CostTypically less expensive than silicone implantsUsually more expensive than saline implants

Usually, if you’re aiming for a super natural look and feel, silicone implants are the way to go. They’re often suggested for women with not much breast tissue or thin skin. They feel softer and more like the real compared to saline implants.

Implant Profile

Implant profile refers to how far the implant sticks out from the chest wall, affecting the projection and shape of the breasts. Profiles range from low, moderate, and high to extra-high, which you can pick based on your body and goals.

Implant shape

There are primarily two shapes: round and teardrop (anatomical). Round implants are symmetrical and give an even look from all angles, adding volume and projection for a fuller appearance, including a perkier cleavage if that’s what you’re after.

Teardrop implants, on the other hand, are shaped to mimic the natural slope of the breast, with a fuller bottom and a tapered top. They give subtle, natural-looking breasts, close to one’s own anatomy, and are especially suited for those who have minimal natural breast tissue.

2-Implant Placement

During breast augmentation surgery, there are two primary placement options:

Subglandular Placement

In this placement, the breast implant is placed behind the breast tissue but in front of the chest muscle (pectoralis major). It’s a good option if you’ve got enough natural breast tissue and not much sagging. This placement can give your breasts a fuller and rounder look.

Submuscular Placement

Also known as subpectoral placement, the breast implant goes under both the breast tissue and the chest muscle. The muscle partially or fully covers the implant. This placement might be better if you’ve got thin breast tissue or a higher risk of seeing the implant or rippling.

Recovery TimeTypically shorter recovery timeMay have a slightly longer recovery time

3-Incision

In breast augmentation surgery, there are several types of incisions that surgeons use to insert the breast implants. The most common incision options include:

Inframammary Incision

This incision is the most popular choice for breast augmentation surgery. Made in the natural fold right under the breast, it gives surgeons good visibility for placing the implant exactly where it needs to go.

Periareolar Incision

This incision is made around the lower half of the areola, allowing for discreet scarring that blends with the natural colour transition. It’s ideal for minimizing visible scars.

Transaxillary Incision

This incision is made in the natural crease of the armpit (axilla). While it keeps scars off your breasts, you might notice more visible scarring in your armpit.

Transumbilical Incision

Also known as TUBA (transumbilical breast augmentation), this incision is made in the navel (belly button). The transumbilical incision results in no scarring on the breasts but is limited to saline implants. May not be suitable for all patients or implant types.

4-Implant Size

Implant sizes refer to how much volume the implants have in cubic centimeters (cc) to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. These implants come in all sorts of sizes to fit different bodies and preferences. Implant volumes can vary, usually anywhere from around 100cc to 800cc or even more.

What’s the Cost of Breast Augmentation?

When it comes to the cost of breast augmentation in Ottawa, Canada, it depends upon how experienced and well-known your surgeon is, what kind of implants you go for, and fees for the surgical facility and anesthesia. You might also need to shell out for pre-op tests, post-op garments, meds, and follow-up appointments. On average, you’re looking at around CAD 10,000 plus HST.

How is Breast Augmentation Surgery Performed?

Preparation

On the day of the surgery, you’ll arrive at our surgical facility and get prepped up. This may include taking pre-operative photographs, marking the incision sites, and discussing any last-minute questions or worries you might have with our surgical team.

Anesthesia

Once in the operating room, you’ll get anesthesia that will keep you comfortable and safe during the procedure.

Incision

The surgeon will make an incision according to the pre-determined plan discussed during your consultation and appointments.

Implant Placement

Depending on the surgical plan, the breast implant will be placed either above the chest muscle (subglandular) or beneath the chest muscle (submuscular).

Closure

After the implants are placed and positioned correctly, your surgeon closes up the incisions using dissolvable stitches.

What is the No-Touch Technique for Breast Augmentation?

The "No-Touch Technique" in breast augmentation, often paired with the Keller funnel, involves inserting the breast implant without the surgeon's hands touching it directly. Here's how it works: the implant stays in its sterile packaging and gets loaded into the funnel. Then, the funnel guides the implant into the breast pocket through a tiny incision. This technique helps minimize the risk of bacteria contamination and potential complications like capsular contracture.

Recovering from Breast Augmentation Surgery

After surgery, you'll rest in the recovery room until you’re feeling stable. We'll give you some pain medication and go over post-operative instructions on how to take care of yourself to ease any discomfort and help you heal up. Usually, you can head home the same day, but it's a good idea to have someone drive you and lend a hand during your recovery.

What Results Can I Expect?

Right after the surgery, you’ll notice an immediate increase in your breast size.  But don’t expect the final look until the swelling goes down and the implants settle in place, which can take a few weeks to months.

With proper care, the results of your breast augmentation can stick around for a long time. But remember, implants aren’t forever, and you might need another surgery down the line. Here’s what you can expect immediately after the surgery and the estimated time to fully heal:
