What is Areola Reduction Surgery?

Areola reduction surgery is a safe and effective procedure that removes a small portion of pigmented skin to decrease the diameter of the areola. The goal is to create a more balanced and natural look for your breasts. The procedure is relatively simple and Dr. Lacey can tailor it to your specific needs and what you want to achieve.

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, and is often sought by women who desire larger, perkier, or more symmetrical breasts.

During the breast augmentation surgery, the plastic surgeon makes an incision in the breast tissue or under the breast and places the implants either under or on top of the chest muscles. The size, shape, and material of the breast implants can be customized to meet the specific desires of the patient, resulting in a natural-looking and proportionate appearance.

Breast augmentation can also address issues such as drooping or sagging breasts, and can improve the overall balance and harmony of a person’s figure. With advanced surgical techniques and high-quality implants, breast augmentation surgery can produce long-lasting and satisfying results for those seeking to enhance the appearance of their breasts.

What are the Reasons for Areola Reduction Surgery?

There are several reasons why you might consider areola reduction surgery:

  • Some people are naturally born with larger or unevenly sized areolas.
  • Over time, the areolas can become larger or lose their shape.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause changes in the size and shape of the areolas.
  • Significant weight changes can affect the breast and areola size.
  • Some individuals simply prefer the look of smaller, more proportionate areolas.

If any of these reasons resonate with you, it might be worth discussing areola reduction surgery with Dr. Lacey to see if it could be a good option for you.

What are the Benefits of Areola Reduction Surgery?

The benefits of areola reduction surgery are both aesthetic and psychological:

  • The surgery can create a more balanced and proportional breast appearance, boosting your overall confidence.
  • Many people experience increased self-esteem and body positivity after the procedure.
  • The surgery can be customized to your specific needs and desired results, ensuring a personalized outcome.
  • With a relatively short recovery time, you can get back to your normal activities soon after the surgery.

Areola Reduction Procedure

Here’s a breakdown of the areola reduction surgery process:

Consultation

You'll meet with Dr. Lacey to discuss your goals, medical history, and the procedure details. He'll perform an exam and may take measurements and photos for planning purposes.

Anesthesia

Dr. Lacey will administer local anesthesia to numb the area and limit discomfort. If you’re combining areola reduction with another breast surgery, you may be under general anesthesia.

Incision

Dr. Lacey will make a circular incision around the outer edge of your areola.

Excision

He'll carefully remove a specific amount of pigmented skin to reduce the size of your areola.

Closure

The incision is then closed with fine sutures, either around the entire areola or just at the incision site.

Bandaging

The area is bandaged to protect the incision and promote healing.

Areola Reduction Surgery Recovery:

Areola reduction is usually a minor day procedure, meaning you’ll be able to go home shortly after your surgery is finished.
You’ll likely experience some mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the first few days.

Dr. Lacey will give you specific instructions on how to care for your surgical site:

  • He may prescribe medication to help manage any pain.
  • He’ll show you how to keep the area clean.
  • He’ll advise you to avoid strenuous activities for a while.
  • You’ll have a follow-up appointment with Dr. Lacey to monitor your healing and potentially remove any sutures.

Full recovery typically takes a few weeks, and you’ll see the final results more clearly as the swelling goes down.

Alternative to Areola Reduction Surgery

If your areolas appear larger due to excess weight, losing weight can significantly reduce their size and improve their overall appearance. However, if you’re at a stable weight, and your areolas remain larger than you’d like, then areola reduction surgery is the most reliable and effective option to achieve your desired results.

What Are Other Surgical Options that Could Complement Areola Reduction Surgery?

For a complete breast transformation, areola reduction can be combined with other procedures to create a more balanced and personalized look. Some popular options to pair with areola reduction are:

Nipple reduction

Creates a more proportional look by refining the size of your nipples.

Breast lift

Elevates and reshapes sagging breasts for a more youthful appearance.

Breast augmentation:

Increases breast size and shape for a fuller bust.

Breast reduction:

Reduces breast size for comfort and a more balanced silhouette.

Gynecomastia surgery (for men):

Removes excess breast tissue and/or fat for a firmer, flatter chest.

Risks and Complications

Like any surgery, areola reduction can have potential risks and complications, even though they’re relatively rare. These might include:

FAQs

We use anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout the entire surgery. Afterwards, you might feel some soreness, but it’s usually mild and easily managed by following your post operative instructions.

Scars are usually minimal and placed around the edge of the areola, where they are less noticeable. They also tend to fade over time.

Yes, the results of areola reduction are generally permanent. However, keep in mind that pregnancy, breastfeeding, and major weight fluctuations can affect the appearance of your breasts over time, including the areolas.

There’s no minimum size. The ideal size depends on your body type and what feels right for you.  Generally, the average areola size for a woman of average height is about 4.7cm.Can’t say there is no minimum, then proceed to provide a minimum.

Absolutely! Many people want a more balanced look for their areolas but love their nipples just the way they are. The good news is Dr. Lacey can adjust the size and shape of your areolas without changing the symmetry, direction, shape, and size of your nipples.

If you’re thinking about pregnancy in the future, it’s best to wait on areola reduction surgery until you’ve finished breastfeeding. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can significantly change the size and shape of your areolas, potentially reversing the results of the surgery. Therefore, it’s best to delay the procedure until after breastfeeding.
