What is Breast Implant Revision Surgery?

If you’re not happy with the results of your previous breast augmentation, breast implant revision surgery can help. Over time, breast implants can change due to aging, weight fluctuations, or issues like scar tissue buildup. This surgery allows you to address those concerns and improve the overall look and feel of your breasts.

Why Women Choose Breast Implant Revision?

There are several reasons why women might consider undergoing a breast implant revision surgery:

Implant Malposition

If the implants have shifted out of place, they can create an uneven or unnatural look. Revision surgery can reposition them for a more balanced appearance.

Capsular Contracture

This occurs when scar tissue builds up around the implant, causing hardness, discomfort, and sometimes a distorted shape. Revision surgery can address this issue by removing scar tissue and replacing or repositioning the implant.

Implant Exchange

If you feel like your implants aren't quite right after the breast augmentation, that's where revision surgery comes in. It involves removing your current implants and replacing them with new ones.

Implant Rupture or Deflation

If your implants, typically with a saline implant, have leaked or ruptured, a revision surgery is required for safety.

Visible Rippling

If implant rippling becomes noticeable, revision surgery can replace the implants with a different type or size, or adjust their placement to minimize the appearance of wrinkles.

Ptosis or Drooping

Revision surgery can address ptosis by repositioning or replacing the implants, or even combining it with a breast lift procedure for a more comprehensive correction.

Excessive Animation

If implant movement becomes too visible, revision surgery can involve adjusting the implant placement or using different techniques to minimize animation.

Changes in Aesthetic Preferences

Your preferences can change over time. Revision surgery allows you to choose a new size or shape of implant to achieve your desired look.

Aging and Body Changes

As you age or experience weight fluctuations, the appearance of your breasts and implants can change. Revision surgery can help you adjust to these changes and maintain a natural-looking result.

Benefits of Breast Implant Revision

Breast implant revision offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Breast revision can help you achieve a more desirable breast appearance size whether through implant size change or correction of asymmetry.
  • Revision surgery can address issues like capsular contracture, making your breasts feel softer and more comfortable.
  • Many people experience increased self-esteem and confidence after achieving a look they love.

Breast Implant Revision Procedure Details

Here is a simple overview of what the surgery may involve:

Consultation

Meet with Dr. Lacey or Dr. Jaberi to discuss your concerns, goals, and possible approaches.

Surgical Plan

The doctor will create a personalized surgical plan, which might involve removing, replacing, or repositioning the implants.

Anesthesia

The surgery is usually done under general anesthesia at our private surgical facility to ensure your comfort and safety.

Incision and Implant Removal

During the revision surgery, the surgeon makes incisions, often following the original scar lines, to minimize new scarring. He then removes the existing implants.

Addressing Complications

If there are complications like capsular contracture, he’ll remove the scar tissue.

Implant Replacement

If you want new implants, your surgeon will insert them and make adjustments to achieve the look you desire.

Closing Incisions

Finally, he’ll close the incisions carefully to help with healing and reduce scarring.

Recovery Process

Recovery from breast implant revision surgery at our private surgical facility varies based on the extent of the procedure.

Immediate Post-Operative Care: You may experience some swelling and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed medications.

Downtime: Most people can return to light activities within a week but should avoid strenuous activities for several weeks.

Follow-Up Appointments: Regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Lacey or Dr. Jaberi are essential to monitor healing and ensure the best possible outcome.

Long-Term Results: Final results may take a few months to fully develop as the swelling goes down and the implants settle into place.

Risks and Considerations

While breast revision surgery can be a transformative procedure, it’s important to be aware of potential risks and side effects, which can include:

  • Anesthesia risks
  • Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) or other very rare cancers in the capsule around the breast, such as breast implant-associated squamous cell carcinoma (BIA-SCC). These complications have been noted almost exclusively with certain textured surface implants that are not currently in use in Canada.
  • Breast implant illness, a collection of body and mood-related symptoms that some women have noted after breast augmentation surgery.
  • Bleeding
  • Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications
  • Fat necrosis (fatty tissue found deep in the skin might die)
  • Fluid accumulation (seroma)
  • Hematoma
  • Infection
  • Numbness or other changes in skin sensation
  • Persistent pain
  • Poor healing of incisions
  • Recurrent looseness of skin
  • Skin loss
  • Skin discoloration and/or prolonged swelling
  • Suboptimal aesthetic result
  • Unfavorable scarring

Most of these side effects will heal on their own. However, if you experience any long-lasting or concerning reactions, please contact your surgeon right away. He and our dedicated team are here to support you through every step of your recovery.

FAQs

During breast implant revision surgery, you’ll not feel any pain. However, some discomfort is common after breast revision surgery, mainly due to sutures. You’ll receive pain medication and recovery tips to ensure a comfortable experience.

Some scarring is likely after revision surgery, but our doctors use original incisions to minimize their visibility.

Some initial changes are visible immediately, but swelling and bruising take a few weeks to subside. Final results with natural-feeling breasts may take up to 6 months.

Results can last many years, but implants may eventually need replacement or adjustment due to aging or other factors.

Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon for your breast implant revision is crucial. Dr. James Lacey, our surgeon, is not only Royal College Certified but also holds a Fellowship in Hand Surgery and has extensive experience in the field. This ensures you receive the best care and minimizes risks.

Yes, you can. We offer a variety of procedures that can be combined with your surgery, like a breast lift. During your consultation, discuss your specific goals with Dr. Lacey. He’ll recommend the best combination for your desired outcome.
