If you sometimes avoid showing your legs because of spider veins—those small clusters of red veins that appear on the thighs, calves, and ankles—you are not alone. It’s estimated that at least half of all women experience this common cosmetic issue. Spider veins can be frustrating and affect your confidence, but there’s good news: effective, safe, and relatively painless treatments are available to help you eliminate them and improve your confidence.

What is the Vein Reduction Procedure?

Vein reduction procedure is a medical procedure aimed at minimizing the appearance of spider veins and damaged capillaries. These veins can be unsightly and often cause discomfort or pain. Vein reduction treatments can enhance both the aesthetic appearance and overall comfort of patients.

What are the Types of Vein Reduction Treatments?

1-Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein. This solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and stick together, and eventually turn into scar tissue. Over time, the vessel fades from view.

2-Laser Therapy (Available at KPCS)

Laser therapy uses focused light to treat spider veins and damaged capillaries. The laser heats the vein, causing it to collapse and seal shut. Over time, the vein is reabsorbed by the body.

3-Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT)

EVLT is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat larger varicose veins. A laser fiber is inserted into the vein, and the heat from the laser closes off the vein.

4-Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

RFA uses radiofrequency energy to heat and close off varicose veins. A catheter is inserted into the vein, and radiofrequency energy is applied to heat the vein walls, causing them to collapse and seal shut.

5-Ambulatory Phlebectomy

This surgical procedure involves making small incisions to remove varicose veins. It is typically used for larger, bulging veins that are close to the surface of the skin.

What are the Benefits of Vein Reduction Treatments?

Here are the benefits of vein reduction treatments:

  • These treatments get rid of unsightly veins
  • Improved confidence now that the veins aren’t visible.
  • Most vein reduction treatments allow you to get back to your daily routine quickly.

What are the Risks and Complications Associated With Vein Reduction?

While vein reduction treatments are generally safe, there are some potential risks and complications to be aware of:

How to Prepare for Vein Reduction Treatment?

Getting ready for your vein reduction treatment is quite simple.

Schedule a consultation with our medical aestheticians at Kanata Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery. This is your chance to discuss your concerns, goals, and medical history. We will perform a medical evaluation to determine the best treatment option for you.

Wear loose-fitting clothes on the day of your appointment for both comfort and to allow the technician easy access to the treatment area.

In the days leading up to your procedure, drink plenty of water to keep your veins plump. This makes them easier to target during the treatment. If you take any blood thinners, be sure to discuss them with our team beforehand, as they might need to be adjusted temporarily.

If the treatment is on your legs, avoid shaving the area for a day or two before your appointment. Finally, don’t hesitate to ask our team any questions you may have about the procedure or what to expect. We’re here to help and ensure you have a smooth and comfortable experience.

What Can I Expect After the Vein Reduction Treatment?

Proper post-treatment care is crucial for smooth recovery:

Compression is Key

After your treatment, the area will be wrapped with bandages for a few hours or even a day. You'll also need to wear compression stockings for a while, possibly until the end of the day or even longer for best results. These stockings help reduce the risk of complications and improve the cosmetic outcome.

Take it Easy

Avoid strenuous physical activity for 48 hours after the treatment to allow your body to heal.

Bruising is Possible

Small bruises at the treatment site may occur, and occasionally a larger bruise might form.

Temporary Soreness

You might experience some tenderness around the treatment site. This is usually mild and shouldn't require pain medication.

Follow-Up Appointments

Attend all follow-up appointments so our team can monitor your healing and progress.

Avoid Sun

Protect the treated area from the sun for a while. This helps prevent any changes in skin colour where you were treated.

FAQs

Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The number of treatments depends on your individual case. our team will give you an estimate during your initial assessment based on the number, size, and location of your spider veins.

Here’s a rough idea:

Fewer spider veins or capillaries: You might only need 3-4 treatments.

More spider veins: You might need 7 or 8 sessions, or even more in some cases.

These appointments typically last 30 minutes, and the medical estheticians can treat a number of veins during each session.

The results of vein reduction treatments can be long-lasting. However, new veins may develop over time, so you might need additional treatments if new veins bother you.

Don’t worry about a lot of pain during vein reduction treatment. Laser vein treatments feel similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin, uncomfortable and short lived.

Laser vein treatments are not typically covered by insurance. If you’re interested in submitting to your insurance company for reimbursement, it’s best to contact them directly prior to your appointment to see if it’s something they’ll cover.

Results can vary based on the type of treatment. Some treatments, like sclerotherapy, might show results within hours or days for smaller spider veins. But for larger veins, it could take weeks or even months to see the full effect.  Laser vein reduction results may be visible immediately, as the pulse from the laser collapses the vessel. The vessel is then processed out of your body through your lymphatic system.

Yes, vein reduction treatments can often be done alongside other cosmetic procedures to give you the results you desire. If you have other concerns you’d like to address, talk to our team during your consultation.

Laser vein reduction treatments at Kanata Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery offer a safe and effective way to address the appearance and discomfort of spider veins. With a variety of treatment options available, our experienced team can help you achieve smoother, healthier-looking skin.
