Commonly known as “ear pinning”, otoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure used to correct prominent or protruding ears. This operation can also be used to help reshape the ears or decrease any asymmetry between the two sides. While many of these operations are performed in the paediatric population, a large percentage of otoplasty patients are adults.
An otoplasty is a surgical procedure that alters the shape of the ears to decrease prominence and help decrease asymmetry. The operation is done under either local or general anaesthesia at the patient’s preference and lasts 1-2 hours. The surgical incision is located on the back of the ear so it remains hidden from site, and the underlying cartilage is then sculpted to the desired form. This is usually done by holding the cartilage in shape with sutures, although in some cases a small amount of cartilage needs to be removed. The surgical incision is then closed with dissolving sutures and a head dressing is applied that stays in place for 5-7 days.
Most patients inquiring about otoplasty surgery request correction of protruding or asymmetric ears. A wide age range of patients are seen at Kanata Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery for ear surgery, ranging from school-aged children to adults. If you are interested in ear pinning surgery, the best place to start is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Lacey or Dr. MacArthur at Kanata Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery. At your appointment the surgeons will listen to your concerns and determine if you would be a candidate for otoplasty surgery. You will have opportunities to ask questions with the surgeons and can review before and after photos from past patients.
